This has been an incredibly tough year for all of us in the LGBTQ+ community, and for the world in general. Last summer Pride events were cancelled across the globe, which meant the roar of voices fighting for equality were not heard, funds weren’t raised for charities dependent on them, LGBTQ+ owned businesses didn’t make it through the pandemic and homophobia, transphobia, racism and misogyny reached new levels in certain parts of the globe.
Anyone who questions why Pride still exists around the world only has to look at the heartbreaking story of Alireza Fazeli-Monfared who was murdered by his own family in Iran last month purely for being gay.
Rights have been eroded, misinformation spread, hate crimes are on the increase and members of our community are being attacked and murdered. Last year alone 350 trans people that we know of were murdered, and the true figure could be much higher.
All of the above may seem bleak but as a community we have torn down walls, achieved unimaginable levels of equality in certain countries, fought oppression and overcome bullies and aggressors.
It may seem idealistic to think we can get to a place of true equality for EVERYONE within our LGBTQ+ community, but there is only one way we will find out and that’s to try. And try together.
